The Triune God

In worship, we declare our faith in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God forever (this belief is summarized in the Nicene Creed and the Apostles’ Creed in our worship). We rejoice in the Triune God! We encounter God in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus is the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15). He became human on earth as a gift from the Trinity to us, so that we might see God in Jesus Christ and receive God’s love through Jesus.

Scripture often uses the word “God” to point us to the Father. The Father is the invisible God, who declared His will for everything from before creation and throughout all history. He is the eternal, holy God who is wonderful and indescribable.

After Jesus ascended to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to the church to live in the power of the resurrection (Ephesians 1:19-20). We may try to do good according to our own strength, and we may live good lives through our own power and discipline. But God desires us to live holy lives. A holy life requires God’s presence in our lives. He gives us strength and joy from the Holy Spirit, which makes holy living possible.

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together are one God who radiates greatness, awe, glory, and wonder. This God is pleased to dwell with us both now (John 1:14) and forever (Revelation 21:3). Because the one holy God is Father, Son, and Spirit who have always been in harmony with each other, God desires to know His people and bring them together as one eternal community of peace.
